Activities

  1. Research. Judy researches her family history and finds out the origin of her surname. Get learners to trace the origin and meaning of their last name.

  2. Creative writing. Get learners to write a short story (500 words) about someone from history who could have been one of their ancestors.

  3. Research. Get learners to choose a historical royal from the book whom they’d like to learn more about. Have them research on the Internet, then create a mini-biography of the person they choose. The mini-biographies should include the full name of the figure, their nicknames, birth and death dates, where they were from, and five interesting facts about the royal figure.

  4. Role play and art. Get learners to imagine they’re a Royal for the day and design and build their kingdom. What will they be addressed as (Lady X of Y)? What is their kingdom called? Where is it? What does their throne look like? What are their royal rules? What does their castle look like? What do their royal subjects look like?

  5. Art and design. Get learners to create their own family crest with words and images that tell their family’s story and history. Judy uses a knight’s head, peacock feathers, a pirate, a crown, a ship, and a lioness.
